1 – Wait 72 Hours to Shampoo

One of the biggest hair color maintenance tips we can give you is to avoid shampooing your hair for a minimum of 72 hours after having it colored; otherwise, you could just be washing your new color down the drain! During the coloring process, the cuticle layer of the hair is open, which allows the color to penetrate the hair. It can take up to 3 days for the cuticle to close, so waiting a few days to shampoo your hair will allow more time for the color to soak into the hair, helping your color to last for longer before it needs to be refreshed.

2 – Choose the Best Hair Care Products

Another important tip if you want to keep your hair color looking fresh and vibrant for longer is to use the right products. Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner will help to avoid stripping out the natural oils in your hair – which in turn could also strip out the color. Ask your stylist to recommend the best shampoo for your hair color and hair type. 3 – Turn Down the Heat!

Did you know? Hot water is not good for your hair color! We all love a nice hot shower, but when it comes to washing your hair, it is better to turn down the temperature and wash with barely warm water, then rinsing in cold. Hot water is going to open the cuticle, allowing the color the be washed away. Use warm water to help the products penetrate the hair, then rinse with cold in order to seal the cuticle to retain natural moisture and maintain the color.

4 – Wash Your Hair Less

There actually isn’t any need to be washing your hair on a daily basis, especially not if you want to help your hair color to last longer. When you wash your hair too often, it strips away some of the natural oils that keep your locks moisturized. Cut back to washing 2 or 3 times per week and use dry shampoo in between to keep that color locked in for longer.
