4 Reasons to Avoid Box Dye to Touch Up Your Hair Colour at Home

Apr 28, 2020

Wow! If anyone had told us a few months ago that we would be in this current lockdown situation, we wouldn’t have believed it! However, we have to roll with the punches and do what we can to help flatten the curve and stop Coronavirus spreading so quickly. Unfortunately, that means that, like so many other businesses, we have had to close Trendz Salon for the time being. As a result, many of our clients have found themselves having to maintain their own hair. While many things can be done at home, hair color is not one of them, and we urge all of our clients to step away from the box dye and leave it to your stylist to fix your color once we reopen. We recently shared some tips that can help to preserve your hair color too.

Let’s take a look at some of the reasons it is better to avoid using a box dye.

1 – Results Are Unpredictable

Learning how to apply hair color properly takes your stylist a lot of practice and training. It is not as simple as just using dye in your chosen color. There is no such thing as ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to hair color. Many different things can affect the outcome of coloring your hair, including:

  • Your hair type
  • The current condition of the hair
  • The medication you are taking
  • Allergies
  • Skin type
  • If the hair is already colored

It isn’t as easy as just choosing ‘medium brown’ or ‘warm copper’ as the results are likely to vary. It is not unusual for stylists to mix multiple shades to get the right hair color for you.

2 – Box Hair Color Can Damage the Hair

One of the most significant issues with box dye is that it can be damaging for your hair. It is mass-produced, and to save money, it often uses low-quality ingredients, harsh chemicals, and additives. These not only damage the hair but, in some cases, will even cause a change in texture as the chemicals permanently penetrate the follicle. Lightening your hair at home is especially damaging as box kits often contain much stronger peroxide than is necessary.

3 – Flat, Lifeless Color

When you use a box dye, you will get a flat, lifeless hair color. It won’t give you any dimension the way professional hair color will. It’s just one color all over your hair. As mentioned previously, professional stylists will use a blend of shades and colors to create a beautiful multidimensional look.

4 – It’s a False Economy

It may seem like you are saving money by purchasing a box hair color, but in reality, it is a false economy. Professional color correction at a salon is going to cost so much more than booking a hair color appointment would have in the first place.

As you can see, it is just not worth it to dabble with box hair color. Even if your roots are showing or your color is fading, remember that this is only temporary, and your favorite stylist will be available soon to help get your hair back in shape. We are scheduled to reopen on May 1, by appointment only.
